Seafront shelters in Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Cove gardens have been boarded up in an attempt to protect them from ongoing vandalism.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported on two separate attacks during January when the windows of the shelters were smashed, fences torn down and the wooden benches left damaged.
Last week, Sedgemoor District Council announced it was investing £5,000 on an upgraded infra-red CCTV camera in the gardens to help police monitor the facility – and on Tuesday (February 12th), the council began boarding up the shelters.
James Presdee of Sedgemoor’s Clean Surroundings Team, explained to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The shelters are in a poor state of repair following recent vandalism.”
“Whilst the council awaits to hear whether it has gained lottery funding to regenerate the gardens, the shelters are being boarded up for safety reasons as a short-term measure to prevent further damage.”
Sedgemoor District Council hopes to regenerate the gardens in coming years if it is successful in gaining £250,000 of Heritage Lottery funding.
