The M5 motorway was quieter than normal on Sunday as motorists heeded warnings about potential significant delays when a 145 ton boiler was moved from near Burnham-On-Sea to a paper mill in Watchet.
The journey began at 9am when the boiler – measuring 16ft wide, 16ft high and 100ft long – left Sedgemoor Services near Burnham and travelled to M5 junction 24.
From there it headed into Bridgwater on the A38, turned left onto the A39 Broadway and continued along the A39 through Williton to Washford Cross where it will turn right onto the B3190 and into the paper mill at Watchet.
Throughout the journey the load was escorted by police and it was expected that the journey could take up to seven hours to complete.
“During the move there are likely to be significant tailbacks and motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use an alternative route if possible,” police had warned. “The nature of this load and the difficulty of the route meant the load could not be moved during the hours of darkness.”
