Burnham-On-Sea resident digs up 1920s medal in her garden

-

A Burnham-On-Sea resident has discovered a 1920s medal while digging in her front garden.

Angela Jones, pictured, this week told Burnham-On-Sea.com how she made the find outside her house and is now researching its past.

“I made the wonderful find while installing a new path and removing an old gate,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The medal just emerged out of the dirt and stones. It’s about an inch in diameter and is in really good condition.”

The item bears the letters “W.M.C.” and the date “1929” and is circular in shape with a cross through the centre.

A pin on the back is still intact to enable it to be attached to clothing.

Angela thinks the medal may have originally been awarded to a member of the Women’s Medical Corp, but is interested in finding out more.

“I have no idea whose the medal was or what the history behind it is, so it would be great to discover more about its past. I don’t expect it to be valuable, but am just interested in solving the mystery behind it.”

A spokesman from Somerset County Museum, based in Taunton, told Burnham-On-Sea.com it is aware of the discovery and is researching the medal’s past.
