Police have today (Tuesday) said that a child who was air-lifted to hospital from a crash on the M5 near Burnham-On-Sea on Bank Holiday Monday remains in a “serious but stable condition”.
These were the scenes after the two-vehicle accident occurred between Junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare and Junction 22 for Burnham-On-Sea shortly before 11am.
The Great Western air ambulance was called to the scene and took off with a child onboard shortly before 12pm, as pictured here.
The child was flown to Bristol Children’s Hospital in a serious condition while an adult was taken by road ambulance to the BRI. Three others were treated by paramedics at the scene.
Officers from Avon and Somerset Constabulary were on the scene along with ambulance crews, HART, and the fire service.
The M5 motorway was temporarily completely closed in both directions, causing long delays to holidaymakers returning home from the Bank Holiday weekend.
Motorists resorted to getting out of their cars in the queues, which also led to problems on the northbound carriageway.
A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said: “We received the call at 10.45am to reports of five patients after a two-car crash.”
“There were three walking wounded who were all treated on scene. One person was taken by land ambulance to Bristol Royal Infirmary.”
“A child was also airlifted to Britol Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.”
“We sent three crews, one officer, Great Western Air Ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, and our Hazardous Response Team.”
