Post office near Highbridge is earmarked for government axe

-

A post office near Highbridge has this week been earmarked for closure by the government.

An announcement made on Tuesday (February 26th) revealed that Bason Bridge post office near Highbridge is being considered for the axe as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

Bason Bridge post office manager Nigel Hancock told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Wednesday morning: “We knew there was a possibility of this happening when we took over the post office two years ago, but it is a great shame.”

“That said, I do understand that the government has to sacrifice a few post offices to make wider savings.”

In a statement, Post Office Ltd spokesman Tony Jones said: “Taking the decision to close any post office branch is always very difficult and we know will cause concern to many of our customers. Post Office Ltd’s aim is to continue to provide essential services and support retail businesses and the local community as possible.”

A six-week consultation period is now underway to consider the potential impact of the closure and whether it should proceed.

Burnham and Highbridge MP David Heathcoat-Amory launched a campaign earlier this week to save post offices from closure.
