Burnham pool petition soars into UK’s top 200 best-supported polls

-

The online petition to save Burnham-On-Sea’s swimming pool from closure has become one of the UK’s top 200 best-supported petitions on the Prime Minister’s official Number 10 Downing Street website.

By Friday morning (February 29th), a total of 766 people had signed the petition calling on the Prime Minister to subsidise sports facilities, such as Burnham Swimming Pool.

The success of the online petition – which can be accessed here – follows an earlier 6,642-name petition and protests by swimmers at the start of the year.

Concerned Burnham resident Verena Clare Brandon launched the online petition on the Number Ten Website after hearing about the closure plans.

“Pools are very important facilities for many community members. Museums are subsidised – why not sports facilities?” she questioned.

The petition is due to continue until 18th April, six weeks before a final decision on the pool’s future will be made.

Sedgemoor District Council, the pool’s current owner, plans to shut the facility at the end of May unless a new owner can be found as part of wide-ranging cost-cutting proposals caused by its £1.8m funding shortfall.

A huge campaign to save the threatened pool is underway by the Save Our Swimming pool (SOS) campaign group which is backed by Burnham-On-Sea.com, the home of the group’s official website.
