Wessex Water has pledged to increase the capacity of sewers in Brent Knoll after sewage has been seen bubbling up through manhole covers in the village this month.
Residents say the village has been suffering from long-running issues that have led to standing water and sewage being spotted in Brent Street, pictured here during flooding.
Several residents have told Burnham-On-Sea.com they have also suffered from toilets and washing machines being unable to feed water into the sewer system because it is backed up.
A Wessex Water spokesman said: “We have experienced an unprecedented amount of rainfall over the last few months which has led to sewers in the area struggling to cope with an increase of flows.”
“As a result, work to increase the capacity of sewers in Brent Knoll will start later this year. In the meantime, we are working closely with residents in the area to reduce the risk of flooding to their properties.”
Brent Knoll Parish Council has been using a mobile pump to reduce flooding in the village, while Wessex Water has also been using tankers to remove excess sewage and relieve pressure on blocked pipes.
