Lifeguards at Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow beaches have finished their season after a busy few months keeping them safe.
The RNLI lifeguards worked alongside Sedgemoor District Council’s team of beach wardens and clean surroundings staff.
During the summer, the beach safety staff helped with incidents such as rescuing a dolphin on Berrow beach with BARB and Burnham Coastguards, helping a young girl that had a suspected broken arm, dealing with a gentleman who had collapsed at a café, and coming to the aid of a lady who fell on The Esplanade.
Along with all of this, the lifeguards and beach wardens ensured that beach users kept away from the sea at low tide.
“They also spoke to hundreds of people throughout the summer warning them of the dangers of the sinking sand/mud and giving safety advice. There were also many minor incidents from first aid to missing children,” said a spokesperson.
The Sedgemoor beach wardens will remain on duty until late September – supervising beach activities, providing basic first aid, issuing jetty permits, and collecting car parking fees. They are also trained to the Royal Life Saving Society ‘Beach Safety Wardens’ standard.
The RNLI guides also visited 11 schools in the area and gave a ‘Meet the lifeguard’ safety talk to over 1,500 children. The RNLI lifeguards are due to resume their duties again next year during July and August.
