Over 150 people attended the launch of a new project on Saturday (February 8th) to create a new archive of Burnham-On-Sea’s history plus a new historical trail in the town.
The ‘Capture Burnham’ project was officially started at a free event in the town’s Princess Theatre, attended by scores of residents including Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Martin Cox.
The event provided a chance for members of the public to find out how they can get involved, learn more about the history of Burnham and see archive film footage of the town.
North Sedgemoor Local History Group chairman John Strickland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were delighted with the turnout at the launch event and the level of participation from the audience during the evening, sharing memories and old experiences.”
The project is being run by North Sedgemoor Local History Group, which recently received £25,200 from the Heritage Lottery, alongside a further £1,500 given by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council plus £1,000 from Somerset County Council to develop a heritage trail and supporting online archive.
During Saturday’s launch event, it was also announced that training sessions will be given to users of the new online archive.
The history group has invited members of the public to nominate items for inclusion in the archive during March.
Organisers will also shortly be finalising the history trail which will feature a minimum of 30 locations. The history trail will use QR codes so that visitors with smart phones can connect with information online whilst a leaflet will enable those not yet using mobile technology to explore the heritage and history of Burnham.
