Burnham-On-Sea town councillor’s car badly damaged in seafront smash

-

Police have appealed for witnesses after a crash on Burnham-On-Sea seafront left a councillor’s car badly damaged early today (Sunday, July 17th).

Officers were called to The Esplanade at 3.20am after councillor Neville Jones dialled 999 to alert police to the incident.

Police found a vehicle had slammed into the councillor’s blue Toyota outside Quantock Court, shunting it into the back of a white van parked a few metres away.

“My wife, Margo, heard the collision but when we looked it in the dark we couldn’t see what had happened and we reported to the police that my car had been stolen. It was only when they came to investigate that the full scale of what’s happened emerged,” Cllr Jones told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The crash has been a great shock to us – the car has suffered serious damage at the front and back and is probably a write-off. The white van parked in front of mine was also damaged.”

Neville added: “This is the third accident along this stretch of The Esplanade in recent years.”

“It highlights the need for some traffic calming measures to be introduced here. A set of speed bumps on the road to slow down vehicles would cost just a few hundred pounds – possibly £500 each – for the County Council to install.”

Meanwhile, anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to contact Burnham Police on 0845 456 7000 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
