Burnham-On-Sea’s MP presented a petition to Parliament on Monday evening (July 18th) from residents across the area calling for a halt to National Grid’s consultation on the plans to build 152ft high pylons across the Somerset countryside.
Tessa Munt formally handed in the petition at the end of Monday’s proceedings in the Commons.
Paul Hipwell, chair of the No Moor Pylons campaign group, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are getting increasingly frustrated that National Grid are not listening to our concerns. Stringing cables across our countryside is simply not acceptable when there are other ways such as burying the cable.”
“Pylons belong in the last century. In the 21st century we should be following the example of other countries and burying the cables.”
The wording of the petition states: “The petition of residents declares that the petitioners believe National Grid’s consultation on proposals to erect 152ft high pylons is flawed; that the proposal would blight the beautiful unspoiled Somerset countryside; and further declare that the petitioners accept that electricity transmission is essential but the petitioners are concerned.”
Presenting a petition in Parliament is a traditional right of constituents to ensure MPs are aware of concerns.
