Plans for a major leisure complex on Burnham’s seafront have been dealt a blow after Sedgemoor District Council indicated it would not be giving £60,000 of funding to the project.
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here earlier this month that entreprenuer Paul Chatwin – who last year proposed a mini golf course for The Esplanade – hopes to build a new £200,000 entertainment and leisure complex called Burnham Point.
The development, on the South Esplanade in front of Burnham Holiday Village, would consist of an 18 hole mini-golf course, an area for children’s fairground rides, plus 20 seaside chalets.
Under the proposals, the chalets would be let to the public for day use and also be used for community events.
It was proposed that the 20 chalets would be funded by Sedgemoor District Council at a cost of £60,000 with Mr Chatwin’s company managing them.
Mr Chatwin told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the chalets, pictured, would be owned by SDC and should pay for themselves in four years, providing a profit to SDC after that. He also provided the council with a guarantee that if they decide the chalets aren’t giving them sufficient income then he would buy them for what it cost to build them.
However, a meeting of Sedgemoor’s Capital Planning Group over the past week has indicated that the council would not be giving funding to the scheme.
Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This Sedgemoor group is not a decision making body. However, they did re-iterate that we have no funds to support this initiative.”
