Mean lead metal thieves target school roofs in Burnham-On-Sea area

-

Two schools in Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow have been targeted by thieves who have stolen lead flashing from their roofs over the past week.

The incidents have occurred at Burnham Infants School, Berrow Pre-School and homes in East Huntspill and Axbridge over the past five days, prompting a warning from Burnham Police for householders to be extra vigilant.

Inspector Roger Tolley told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have seen an increase in the number of offences where lead has been stolen – presumably for its scrap metal value.”

“We have very good relationships with scrap metal dealers across the area and regularly check their books to identify sellers.”

“Our enquiries are ongoing into the latest spate of incidents and we would urge anyone with information to get in touch.”

Berrow School headteacher Heather Hector told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It is very frustrating that this has happened – it will cost us hundreds of pounds to repair.”

“We’ve had to patch up the sides of the window skylights with plastic sheeting to keep the rain out for now.”

Residents with information should contact Burnham Police on 0845 456 7000 or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
