New autumn programme of adult classes starts in Burnham-On-Sea

Somerset Skills and Learning (SS&L) has introduced a new programme of classes at its Burnham-On-Sea Centre this autumn.

Ranging from Arts & Crafts and Business & Administration to Bread Making and Sugarcraft, there promises to be something for everyone.

“Whether you want to unleash your inner Picasso in Arts and Wellbeing or Painting and Drawing, or attempting your best Andy Warhol impression in Studio Portraiture Photography – our tutors are all fully qualified and practising professionals, ready to help you along the way,” said spokeswoman Charlotte Goodby.

Among the classes are Breadmaking Made Easy (5th November, 10am, £39.00 for a day workshop). Does your forte lie in the kitchen, but your buns will not rise? This workshop is ideal for those who have always wanted to make their own bread but thought it was too technical. You will learn about the importance of using certain flours and how yeast works, while making a variety of tasty doughs and breads to take home.

Sugarcraft – Peony Tea Cup and Saucer (2nd November to 7th December, 7pm, £100 for 6 sessions). This is suitable for those with experience with Sugarcraft and wish to develop their knowledge and skills further. Create a large multi layered Peony flower and Tea Cup and Saucer with a hand painted design.

Painting and Drawing (5th October – 2nd November, 10am, £79 for 5 sessions) is a
a practical course suited for all abilities. Learning new techniques using an array of materials under professional guidance. You will also be introduced to relevant artists to place your work in a context, as inspiration and to increase your art history knowledge.

Art for Wellbeing (5th October to 7th December, 1pm, £125 for 10 sessions) is aimed at those wanting to discover or rediscover creativity and their talents. This course offers participants a chance to gain confidence in their skills and acquire new ones. You will be able to work on your own individual projects in a relaxed learning environment.

Stained Glass (6th October to 23rd March, 6.30pm, £335 for 20 sessions) is taught by a qualified and practising Stained Glass professional who will guide you through the stages of planning and creating your own beautiful designs.

Creative Photography (5th October to 9th November, 10am, £75 for 5 sessions) is aimed at giving you the basic understanding of how to make the most out of your camera, a hands on approach to the creative photographic possibilities available to you. Your own camera is essential.

Studio Portraiture Photography (16th November to 14th December, 10am, £45 for 3 sessions) is for those with an interest in photography and looking to set up a home studio. You will be able to set up the appropriate lighting settings, use appropriate camera settings and know about good portrait composition. Your own camera is essential.

Computing for You (Various start dates, 7pm, £36 per block) is for those who need help with a specific topic from Word Processing to Internet Security, then our Computing for You Workshop will be ideal. Working with tutor support in three week block sessions.

Computer Qualifications Workshop (Flexible Levels 1 – 3 ECDL Essentials & ECDL Extras, 4th October till 18th June, 6:30pm) is ubsidised by the Skills Funding Agency. If you’d like to further your skills and gain qualifications then Computer Qualifications Workshop Levels 1-3 is perfect for you. The flexible workshop will allow you to study for an internationally recognised qualification, demonstrating your skills at a level appropriate to you.

Apps for your Tablet and Phone (3rd November till 10th November, 7pm, £24 for 2 sessions) is perfect for anyone who has bought an iPad or tablet, been bought one as a present by the family or who is thinking of buying one! You’ll discover the best apps out there to help you plan, get fit, keep in touch with your family, find your way, find what’s happening around you, plan your daily menus, and much much more.

Dyeing to Knit (3rd December, 10am, £50 for a day workshop) centres on learning how to dye your own yarns in a range of vibrant and unique colours which can then be used for knitting projects. Using acid dye suitable for protein fibres like wool, angora and cashmere, you will learn about different methods that create different effects.

Sewing – Japanese Knot Bag (5th November, 10am, £50 for a day workshop) is for those who want a bag to hold their knitting, or even to use as a handbag. Come along to this Sewing – Japanese Knot Bag class and make your own. Using traditional techniques, your tutor will help you complete each stage of the process.

Flower Arranging Christmas Workshop (17th December, 10am £50 for a day workshop). Perhaps you wish to extend your floristry knowledge and are keen to create the Christmas Day table centrepiece of your dreams. You will learn how to make wreaths, garlands and candle displays, helping you get into the festive spirit.
