Council tackles grave problem at Highbridge cemetery

-

Pressure on space at Highbridge cemetery will result in the last few remaining graves being used within the next year.

The Chairman of Burnham’s Joint Burial Committee, Arthur Thorogood, said on Wednesday (April 30th) that Brent Road cemetery will instead be used for most local interments from 2009.

“In Highbridge, the last few remaining graves will be used within the next year and this cemetery will also then operate for reserved graves and interment of ashes,” said Cllr Thorogood.

“Brent Road will then take on the majority of interments and has the land to accommodate residents’ needs for many years.”

“New housing developments in Burnham Without should add to the number of residents using Brent Road cemetery in the future.”

The committee is also planning ahead for the expansion of the Brent Road cemetery.”It is estimated that expansion into the adjoining field will be needed in 10-15 years time and, with this in mind, a construction fund has been set up,” added Mr Thorogood.
