An army bomb disposal team was called to Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday evening (August 17th) after this World War 1 device was brought to the town’s Coastguard Station.
A team from the Royal Logistics Corps was called to The South Esplanade when a member of the public handed in the device that he had uncovered in his garden.
The 30 year-old man, who asked to remain anonymous, found the nine inch long and three inch wide device while replacing a lawn.
He brought it to the Coastguard Station to ask for advice on what to do with it.
Burnham Coastguard Officer Dave Welland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We immediately alerted the police and, in turn, the Royal Logistics Corps Bomb Disposal team were called to investigate.”
Fortunately, the device turned out to be safe. Sgt Craig Lynch, from the Tidworth-based army team, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The shell was a genuine World War 1 device that had the remains of a fuse still intact but there was no explosive inside and it therefore was safe.”
