King Alfred Sports Centre in Highbridge played host to 150 youngsters from Mark School this week when it held its second annual ‘Mini Olympics’ tournament.

The event was part of Mark School’s Health Awareness week and included a wide range of traditional activities such as the high jump, hurdles, football and hockey as well as some less conventional challenges such as egg and spoon relays, welly-wanging and dodge ball.

Event organisers Graham Furze & Amanda Johnson from King Alfred Sports Centre said it had been really encouraging to see so many children enjoying themselves through sport and play.

“We are aiming as a centre to link with as many schools as possible in the next 12 months to raise the importance of active play and exercise in juniors,” Graham told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“We already offer an extensive junior programme but need to make sure the whole community is aware that it’s available.

King Alfred Sports Centre is one of fifteen Somerset leisure centres offering a special discount membership scheme.

This provides access to exercise classes, fitness studios, swimming, and racquet sports for a three month period at the price of £60.

Meanwhile, King Alfred Sports Centres Active Kidz Holiday Club and Sports Scheme will be celebrating its one year anniversary this May Half Term, offering a wide array of fun and exciting activities.

The four-day scheme will host favourites such as Bouncy Castle Multi-Activity Sessions, Gardening, Trampolining, Dance, Football, Outdoor pursuits, a visit from Secret World Wildlife Centre and more. Limited spaces are available.

King Alfred Sports Centre’s Play Tots sessions are also going from strength to strength, and in the first week of May the group welcomed Councillor Rosemary Parsons, whose kind donation on behalf Somerset County Council in January helped purchase equipment to get the session running. The group is open to parents and toddlers and meets every Wednesday between 9.15am and 10.45am.
