A week of calm weather conditions led to a brown smog forming over the Bristol Channel on Friday evening (April 4th).
The brown haze stretched from South Wales across the estuary running northwards, as pictured here from Burnham seafront.
It comes in a week when health warnings have been issued from Public Health England (PHE), Asthma UK and Defra as England experiences the highest levels of air pollution ever recorded by the government.
Across much of England, moderate to high air pollution levels have been measured although the highest levels were in the South East.
Dr Helen Dacre, a meteorologist, said the dust from the Saharan desert and calm conditions had combined to create a potentially “toxic” mix that could cause “dangerous effects on health”.
A change in weather conditions this weekend will lead to a period of wet and windy weather, reducing the risk of further smog.
