Green-fingered gardeners from the Burnham-On-Sea area displayed a colourful collection of blooms when Burnham-On-Sea Horticultural Society held its annual Rose & Sweet Pea Show during the weekend (June 14th and 15th).

Sanders Garden World at Brent Knoll was the venue for the event, which saw a steady flow of visitors to the two-day display.

The prize for the show’s best exhibit went to Laken Earl of Highbridge for the begonias pictured at the top of the page being judged by organiser Martyn Davis.

Burnham Horticultural Society’s David Bryant (pictured right) won first place in the rose classses, while the other key winners included Valerie Davis of Burnham for the best entry in the cut flowers category and Burt Sone, who was awarded first place in the sweet pea category.

Organiser Martyn Davis told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’ve been very pleased with the quality of entries this weekend – it’s been the best-ever show. The weather has not provided ideal growing conditions, but the entries have been superb.”

There was a special presentation at the Rose and Sweet Pea Show by Jim McDonald, Chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Sweet Pea Trials Committee, to Phillip Kerton from Pawlett near Bridgwater, who owns Kerton Sweet Peas at North Farm Cottage.

Phillip has hybridised a new variety of sweet pea, called the ‘Charlotte Emma’ for which he was awarded the Sweet Pea Society’s F.C Harriss Award for the best seedling for exhibition. Phillip’s new variety of sweet pea has already gained the Award of Merit for Exhibition at the RHS Wisley Trials in 2007.
