Eight sacks of rubbish were collected from Burnham-On-Sea beach when members of Burnham and Highbridge’s Youth Town Council held a special litter-pick at the weekend.
Mayor Peter Clayton and Mayoress Jo Burridge organised Saturday’s two and a half hour beach clean-up, when litter was collected from the jetty to Allendale Road.
Cllr Clayton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The litter-pick was a great success with our members collecting eight sacks of rubbish.”
“It was clear that there is a small minority of people that are just not interested in clearing up after themselves, with items such as disposable barbecues and numerous bottles and cans in certain areas. I appreciate the tough job Sedgemoor has in trying to keep it clean.”
He added that the problem of broken glass being discarded on the beach has also become an issue for concern again near the pier.
“We found numerous beer bottles under the Pavilion that had been smashed and some of the glass was just under the surface of the sand. I think it is very important that Sedgemoor is made aware of this problem and it is monitored and dealt with on a regular basis.”
“I think all our members enjoyed the afternoon and we felt this should become a regular event. We may look for other areas of the towns to concentrate on and we would be interested in hearing if there is a particular area of need that we could help to tidy up. I am proud of our youth town councillors who attended and played a small part in helping our environment.”
