A Highbridge resident has this week spoken of his shock at discovering mean thieves had stolen a 25ft flagpole from outside his home – probably for its scrap metal value.
Roger Keen, pictured, found the flagpole which towers over his front garden had been removed, complete with the Union Jack.
“It’s ridiculous that someone would steal such an item,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“We reported it to the police, who said it could have been removed for its scrap metal value.”
“I’ve heard that thefts of metal are increasing but I was quite shocked that I’ve become a victim. We like to fly the flag on special occasions and often get many positive comments from passers-by.”
Inspector Roger Tolley from Burnham Police confirmed officers were investigating the incident.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is the first theft of a flag pole I have ever come across. There has been a general increase in thefts of metal in the area, particularly cabling, piping and roof flashing, so residents do need to be extra vigilant.”
