Man stranded on fishing boat is rescued from River Axe estuary

-

A man was rescued by Coastguards after getting stranded on a small fishing boat in the River Axe estuary next to Brean Down last night (Thursday, September 22nd).

The man alerted Coastguards when his small fishing boat ran aground on the muddy banks of the river estuary.

Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea and Weston were called to the scene and several members waded out across the mud to bring him safely back to the shore.

Burnham Coastguard Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The man had got out of his boat into the mud after finding he’d run aground and then turned back.”

“He decided to try and wait onboard until the next high tide but because it was a cold evening and he had an uncovered boat, we decided it was essential to bring him back to the shore.”

“Several Weston Coastguards went down the bank while the Burnham team illuminated the area and brought him back on a stretcher. He was not hurt.”
