An emotional festive fundraiser in Brent Knoll raised £640 for Pancreatic Cancer UK on Saturday (17th December).
More than 50 people attended the event at Brent Knoll Parish Hall, which was organised by Charlotte Campbell, in memory of her father Malcolm Troy from Burnham-On-Sea, who died of pancreatic cancer in December 2015 aged 59 after a shock diagnosis and short battle with the disease.
At the event, people enjoyed mince pies and mulled wine, took part in a raffle, with all prizes kindly donated by friends, family and local businesses, and found out more about how to recognise the symptoms of pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a five-year survival rate in the single digits. Despite advancements in treating other major cancers, there is still no early detection method for pancreatic cancer. Every day, an estimated 1,006 people worldwide are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and an estimated 985 die from it.
Charlotte Campbell, event organiser, said: “I can’t believe how much money we raised! Everyone who came along gave so generously and it was great that so many people showed up to support this worthy cause.”
“When we found out last summer that my Dad had pancreatic cancer, that was untreatable due to how advanced it already was, it was devestating for our family.”
“But he was an incredibly brave man, who remained strong and inspiring right up until he passed away last Christmas, and it’s a testament to him that so many friends and family attended the festive fundraiser to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK.”
Pancreatic Cancer UK works tirelessly to supporting those affected by the disease, investing in research, lobbying for greater recognition of pancreatic cancer, and being there for everyone involved in the fight.
