Burnham-On-Sea’s Princess Theatre may have to scale back its modernisation programme after being turned down for a crucial grant that would have brought in over £50,000.
The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre submitted an application to Viridor Environmental to fund the refurbishment of the building’s kitchen, bar and other areas.
It comes after the Town Council took on ownership of The Princess from Sedgemoor District Council earlier this year.
Cllr Chris Williams, who is Vice Chairman of the council’s Princess Management Committee, told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday (October 3rd): “Unfortunately, Viridor has told us it will not be giving The Princess a grant, which is disappointing.”
“We’ll need to closely look through the capital improvements programme and possibly remove some of the proposed changes or scale them back to reduce costs.”
Town Council Eileen Shaw added: “Viridor’s decision is based on the fact that we have not been in possession of the building for very long. They may reconsider at a later date.”
The improvements include modernising the bar and kitchen, carrying out external decorations and making structural changes.
