Fresh proposals for a major new Bristol Channel ferry service which would visit Burnham-On-Sea have been unveiled this week.
Entrepreneur Chris Marrow wants to launch the Severn Link ferry operation between Burnham-On-Sea, Minehead, Ilfracombe, Swansea and Penarth.
Burnham town councillors Martin Cox and Neville Jones (pictured) attended a meeting with the Severn Link boss this week where the proposals were unveiled.
“Mr Marrow originally hoped to launch the service between Swansea and Minehead two years ago but there were problems with the landing area in Swansea which led to the whole project being postponed,” Cllr Jones told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Now, he hopes to have better luck and various discussions are underway to make this happen.”
“Mr Marrow says he would like Burnham to play a significant role in the cross-channel service, which would be great for the town.”
“Having a ferry here could bring big economic benefits, with extra shoppers, commuters and holidaymakers.”
Cllr Jones added: “The economic development officer from Sedgemoor District Council has been involved in the discussions and is keen for this to happen, as we all are.”
The proposals would see Burnham, Minehead and Penarth served by the first phase of the ferry service, with Ilfracombe and Minehead joining in a second phase – as shown on the map below.
Mr Marrow originally unveiled his first plans for the ferry operation in 2008, which we reported here. The design of Severn Link’s ferries has been changed to make them better equipped to handle the tides and conditions in the Bristol Channel.
