Police and Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea were called to Brean beach on Saturday afternoon (May 3rd) after a metal detecting enthusiast uncovered several rounds of wartime ammunition.
Brean’s beachwarden raised the alarm after the man uncovered the corroded bullets, which are pictured above.
Burnham Coastguard Officer Dave Welland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A magazine containing seven bullets was found several inches under the surface of the sand.”
“The bullets were corroded but several were still live and posed a small hazard. We therefore secured the area before the police came and took them away for safe disposal.”
The discovery comes just days after the same metal detecting enthusiast prompted a separate scare on Brean beach last month when a Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team was called to investigate possible ordnance, which turned out to be a false alarm, as we reported here.
