This was the scene at a caravan park in Burnham-On-Sea on Friday morning (July 25th) as twenty firefighters from across Somerset were called to deal with a chemical alert.
Six fire crews rushed to Home Farm Holiday Park at 10.36am after toxic fumes were released when two chemicals were accidentally mixed together in a building besides the site’s swimming pool.
“We were called to a dual chemical leak in which fumes were being released,” fire spokesman Paul Slavin told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“We isolated the area, cordoned it off and a scientific advisor was called to the scene. Five gallons of hyperchloride had mixed with a PH reducer, so fire crews in protective clothing were sent inside to neutralise the materials.”
“The area was made safe by around 12.30pm and the cordon lifted.”
Two fire engines from Burnham, two from Taunton, one from Street, and one from Bridgwater were called to the scene, as pictured here.
“Chemical incidents can be dangerous and we have to be careful, hence why so many fire fighters were called to this incident,” explained Mr Slavin.
