Highbridge boxer welcomed home after striking gold in USA

A Highbridge boxer has this week been welcomed home by her coaches after winning a gold medal at a boxing championships in America.

Dionne Crisp was congratulated by King Alfred Amateur Boxing Club coaches Roger Cross and Steve Matthews, as pictured, after returning victorious from the WPFG Championships in New York.

Dionne competed in the 53kg class and beat Hong Kong boxer Yi Ying in a closely-fought bout over three rounds to claim her medal, which was presented to her by Joe Frazier.

Roger told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “She gave a real gutsy performance and really deserved to win. Everyone here at the club is really proud of her.”

Dionne, who lives in Highbridge, starting boxing at the club five years ago. “I was really pleased to win a gold medal and hope it helps a little to put this Highbridge club on the boxing map.”

King Alfred Amateur Boxing Club meets for training sessions on several evenings a week at Burnham Waste in Springfield Road, Highbridge.
