The Great Burnham Bake Off returns to Burnham-On-Sea’s Food and Drink Festival on Saturday 24th May when home and professional bakers will be battling it out to get the attention of the judges.
There are three free-to-enter competitions covering cakes, bread and a dozen uniform scones.
Professionals will be able to enter the cake competition while individual and families bakers all three competitions.
The inclusion of scones did raise some questions for Festival director Beverley Milner Simonds and sponsor Alex Turco.
To get the answers they met up with BBC Great British Bake Off winner Frances Quinn and asked her – is it pronounced ‘sc-on’ or ‘sc-own’… and should it be jam or cream first?
Frances was adamant that it is ‘sc-on’ because “the punch line to what’s the fastest cake just doesn’t work with sc-own!”
She was also firm in her view that it is definitely cream followed by jam using cream as the butter substitute.
All the scone entries will be judged with cream and strawberry jam supplied by festival stall holder The Bumblees.
“All ambitious bakers have to do is to bring their bakes and a completed entry form to the home of the Great Burnham Bake Off, Somerset Skills & Learning in Princess Street on the day of the festival before 2pm,” said Bev.
“The competition will be judged by Frances’s British Bake Off fellow contestant Glenn Cosby who will joined by KDS Fresh Ideas Stage and YouTube star Barry Lewis and Burnham’s MP Tessa Munt. The winner of the bread competition has an added ingredient as an incentive this time – the winner will get a free entry to the World bread Awards sponsored by Tiptree and will be judged by Frances Quinn.”
Glenn Cosby, a contestant on the BBC’s ‘Great British Bake Off 2013’ will be bringing his UK tour to The Princess Theatre on Friday May 23rd to open the town’s Food and Drink Festival.
His live cooking show, called ‘Bake It Big with Glenn Cosby’, will let the audience get up close and personal with him as he makes his trademark bakes.
Glenn will then be in town for the Food & Drink Festival the following day – Saturday May 24th – when he’ll be the star judge of ‘The Great Burnham Bake Off’.
