Villagers in Berrow have reacted with dismay this week to the news that the new owner of the village pub has been granted a demolition order.
Residents were told the news at Berrow’s annual parish council meeting this week after months of uncertainty about the future of the Berrow Inn which went on sale last year.
Barry Kew, Chairman of the parish council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com he is very disappointed that a demolition order has been issued.
“There was to be an initiative announced at our meeting for villagers interested in forming a group to purchase and manage the pub. It really is a sad day for Berrow residents,” he said.
Local district councillor Tony Grimes said he is approaching Sedgemoor District Council to establish the legal position with the hope that the demolition can still be avoided.
Residents are concerned that the property could be converted by developers into flats or new homes, taking away the pub as a community asset.
“No-one wants to see this pub shut down – it’s an important part of village life,” resident John Presley told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
