Fresh safety calls after teenager injured in A38 crash near Burnham

-

Fresh calls have been made for safety to be improved at a busy road junction near Burnham-On-Sea after an accident in which a teenager was rushed to hospital on Thursday morning (October 20th).

Police and two ambulances were called to the junction of Burnham Moor Lane and the A38 Bristol Road shortly after 8.30am after a BMW and a Vauxhall collided head-on, as pictured here.

Ambulance spokesman Dave Rogers told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We received a call at 8.33am to attend a two-car collision. One patient – a female in her teens – sustained a head and leg injury that were not believed to be serious. She was conveyed to Weston General Hospital by ambulance.”

Police diverted traffic around the scene, causing a build-up of rush-hour traffic.

There have been numerous accidents at the junction in recent years and the latest incident has sparked calls for the County Council to re-think safety there.

Town councillor Bill Hancock, who runs the nearby Oaktree Arena, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have seen so many accidents here over the years, but until there’s a fatality the county council tells us that it will do nothing, which is terrible.”

“Something needs to be done. I go pass this junction frequently and every day there are many near misses.”

“I would like to see a new sliproad built onto the A38 to shield oncoming traffic from the vehicles coming off the motorway roundabout.”

“Part of the problem here is that cars are still indicating left when they accelerate away from the M5 roundabout and motorists in Burnham Moor Lane therefore think they’re turning into the road when in fact they are going straight on.”

“It leads to a lot of confusion and avoidable accidents. Sadly, it’s only time before someone is killed here and I would urge the County Council to re-think the layout.”
