Proposals for a major refurbishment of a town centre hotel in Burnham-On-Sea have been given support by town councillors this week.
The plans for the Victoria Hotel in Victoria Street were considered at a council meeting on Monday (January 9th) by members of the Planning Applications Committee.
As Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here, Punch Taverns plans to overhaul the hotel, re-opening it with a brand new modern look.
The scheme includes removing the current entrance porch, wooden fence and archway, rearranging the front seating area, re-painting the exterior, plus installing bi-folding doors, planters and new signs.
Cllr Paul Young said: “It’s great to see the hotel being taken up-market – these plans are just what it needs.”
Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton added: “This is a great improvement for the hotel – I support it.”
Cllr John Parkes added: “I’m always at a loss to understand why smoking areas are placed at the front of buildings like this, next to a public entrance, but I’m pleased to see the front of the hotel is being tidied up with floral planters and a new look… it will create an ‘al fresco’ dining area – a nice new facility.”
Cllr Andy Brewer added: “We’re giving our support to these plans on the grounds of an improvement to the visual amenity and street scene.”
The Town Council’s recommendation to approve the plans is subject to a final decision from Sedgemoor District Council.
As we reported here, the hotel’s former landlords Martin and Dee Lloyd have retired and left the hotel at the end of December, temporarily closing it.
