Police in Burnham-On-Sea and the Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust have launched an initiative this month to reward youngsters for wearing a bicycle helmet.
‘Helmet Watch’ aims to promote children’s bicycle safety during the summer holidays and police will be giving away ‘cycle packs’ to children under the age of 15 who they see cycling in the town while wearing a helmet.
The cycle packs will contain a slide puzzle, a safe cycling information bookmark and the chance to enter a prize draw to win bigger prizes, such as games consoles, computer games and digital cameras.
Inspector Roger Tolley said: “Some children can feel uncomfortable about wearing a cycle helmet, but of course it is essential to their safety. We hope that the Helmet Watch initiative will reward those who put safety first and will also spur others on to do the same.”
“The neighbourhood policing teams in Taunton, Wellington, Burnham and Cheddar will all be on the look out to give these cycle packs away along with volunteers from the Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust. So the message to local children is to enjoy cycling in the warmer weather, but be safe and wear a helmet.”
