Proposals to demolish a former church in Highbridge have been turned down by town councillors this week.
At a meeting on Monday night (January 9th), members of the Town Council Planning Applications Committee voted to reject the demolition plans for the former Gospel Hall in Newtown Road.
Councillors expressed concern about the lack of any future plans for the site.
Cllr Andy Brewer said: “We would prefer to see the building retained to preserve the history of Highbridge.”
Cllr John Parkes added: “I strongly object to the building being demolished – I am concerned that another part of Highbridge’s history would be lost.”
“We have no sight of any plans for the site and do not want it to be boarded up for years like the Highbridge Hotel.”
Councillors decided to lodge an objection against the demolition of the building, however the final decision on whether the work goes ahead now rests with Sedgemoor District Council.
The former Highbridge Gospel Tabernacle building in Newtown Road is due to be pulled down after its owner submitted a Demolition Order with Sedgemoor District Council, as we first reported last November.
