Highbridge-based Monarchs Acrobatic Gymnastics Club held its annual presentation evening at the weekend where awards were handed out to its top young gymnasts.

For the first time, the club held the evening at the Oak Tree Arena in Highbridge, which the organisers said was a perfect venue.

Saturday’s event was compered by Paul Shepherd – known to many as ‘Shep’ – who started off with some thoughts about the club’s sadly-missed President Neville Jones, who’d always been a huge supporter of the club and regularly attended displays and presentation evenings to hand over awards.

This was followed by a presentation produced by one of the club’s senior gymnasts, Jacob Baker, to look back at all of the competitions and events throughout 2016.

Awards were then presented to several of the gymnasts. In the NDP group they included Most improved partnership – Holly Parsons and Holly Phillips; Newcomer award – Naomi Lourenco; Service to the club – Jess Smith; Attendance award – Connie Skinner; Neville Jones Trophy for the most outstanding gymnast – Elijah Keedwell.

In the FIG group, awards went for Most improved partnership – Joe Blake and Kian Hawkes; Newcomer award – Erin Morgan; Service to the club – Eloise Baker; Attendance award – Eloise Baker; ad the Neville Jones Trophy for the most outstanding gymnast – Alice Kelson. The Merrett Award went to Ornela Velaj.

“After a brilliant evening it is back to training as normal and we have a team of gymnasts competing in Scotland next weekend and then a series of competitions every month right up until the end of July,” the club’s Mandy Warburton told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“We always welcome new members to the club and we now have a new website developed by one of our coaches – Leonie Warburton – which is here and gives details everything we offer.”
