Town councillors have this week decided that a taxi rank in Burnham-On-Sea town centre should remain as it is and not be converted into extra shoppers parking.
The council’s Town Projects Committee discussed the College Street taxi rank, pictured here, during a meeting on Wednesday (January 25th).
Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton said: “Having worked opposite this taxi rank for 28 years I can certainly vouch that it is a very well used taxi rank. That end of the High Street needs a taxi rank and I don’t think we should be taking this any further. It is very much needed.”
Cllr Janet Keen added: “The taxi businesses are paying a considerable sum of money for their licenses. Knowing that this is a safe and popular drop-off point for people who don’t drive to access the likes of shops and ATMs and then be picked up again later, I think it would be foolish to think about removing it.
And Cllr Nick Tolley added: “This is a street I often use and gaining two spaces against a problem that sometimes amounts to 25 vehicles blocking the other side of the road would have no little or no affect. I would like to see the taxi rank stay.”
Councillors on the committee agreed that the Town Clerk should write to Sedgemoor District Council explaining that it does not want to see any changes.
