Burnham-On-Sea councillors approve rise in town Mayor’s allowance

-

Town councillors in Burnham-On-Sea have voted in favour of raising the Mayor’s annual allowance.

Members of the council’s Policy and Finance Committee voted in favour of increasing the allowance from £4,200 to £5,000.

Town Clerk Denise Emery told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The amount of the allowance has been unchanged for five to six years so an increase was due.”

“Every Mayor has been out of pocket when they take on this important role, which isn’t right.”

The increase was proposed by Cllr Andy Brewer, seconded by Cllr Janet Keen, and was passed by a majority of councillors.

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton abstained from the vote, having proposed that a smaller amount of £4,500 be approved for this year.

The decision is subject to a further final vote at the full Town Council meeting during February.
