A road in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea was closed for almost two hours on Thursday afternoon (September 25th) following a suspected gas leak at a property in Victoria Street.

Fourteen firefighters were sent to investigate the incident at a flat above a chemist’s shop, as pictured here.

It came after a local resident reported a strange gas, suspected to be Carbon Monoxide, was leaking shortly after 2pm.

Two fire engines from Burnham-On-Sea and a specialist vehicle from Taunton were called to the scene.

Police shut Victoria Street and diverted traffic around the area while the crews investigated the incident.

Fire spokesman Paul Slavin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Firefighters from the brigade’s gas detection unit wore breathing apparatus to enter the property and investigate, but no trace of the suspect gas was found.”

“We couldn’t find a problem despite a thorough investigation and therefore believe this was a false alarm with good intent,” he said. The last firefighters left the scene at 4.20pm.
