Police in the Burnham-On-Sea area have launched an operation to crack down on metal thefts after a spate of incidents in the area in recent weeks.
Local officers are working with local scrap metal dealers to tackle the problem, which is part of a nationwide increase.
Chief Inspector Yannis Georgiou said: “Metal thefts have been on the rise in recent months. There have been 22 in the Somerset West policing district in the last two weeks alone and we are determined to prevent this type of crime from continuing.”
“Over the coming weeks, officers across Burnham-On-Sea and other local towns will be stepping up patrols in hot spot areas and making visits to local scrap dealers to offer advice and support. We are also looking at implementing a long-term solution to this problem.”
It comes after Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this year the theft of lead from several church roofs in the Burnham area and the recent removal of a metal plaque from the town’s seafront.
Neighbourhood policing teams are also visiting vulnerable locations in the area, such as churches, schools, commercial premises and some older residential properties, offering crime prevention advice specific to this type of crime.
Chief Inspector Georgiou added: “If you own a property that could be vulnerable to metal theft, we advise that you consider implementing security measures.”
