Wildlife rescuers retrieve stranded seal washed up on Brean beach

-

Wildlife rescuers were called to Brean on Thursday morning (October 2nd) when this young seal was spotted stranded on the beach after being washed ashore.

The Common Seal, weighing around 40kg, was spotted on the beach by a local resident who alerted East Huntspill’s Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre.

A team from the centre arrived in the middle of the morning and the animal, who was very tired but otherwise healthy, was taken away to recuperate.

“We think it was probably washed up the Bristol Channel in this week’s bad weather,” Secret World’s Simon Kidner told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“He was exhausted but seems to be in a good condition and will be released after getting some special attention over the next few days.”

The stranding of the seal came after Burnham-On-Sea.com reported on Wednesday how gale-forced winds had lashed the area, whipping up heavy waves.

It is thought the bad weather is the reason why the animal got into difficulty.

It is not the first time that marine animals have been washed ashore in recent years.

A porpoise was washed up on Burnham beach in July last year and a young seal pup was found alive on Berrow beach in November 2005. A dead seal was also washed up on Burnham-On-Sea’s beach in June this year.
