A new amateur radio station will be operating in Burnham-On-Sea this weekend.
Burnham-On-Sea Moose International has recently started an amateur radio club and will be operating the station from the BAY Centre during the FolkFest fun day this Saturday (21st June) and Sunday (22nd June).
There are five licensed radio operators in the group and they will be showing and operating their Special Event Station – GB4JJD – from 10am-6pm on both days.
A spokesman said: “There will be HF Transceivers and VHF Transceivers in use, operating on several frequencies in MHz. These will be: 1: 40 m – 7.0250 – CW & 7.120 LSB 40m half wave dipole; 2: 20 m – 14.0150 – CW & 14.250 USB 20m half wave dipole & G5RV – Inverted ‘V’; 3: 15 m – 21.0100 – CW & 21.250 USB 15m half wave dipole & G5RV – Inverted ‘V’; 4: 10 m – 28.0500 – CW & 28.450 USB 10m half wave dipole & G5RV – Inverted ‘V’; 5: 2 m – 144.150 – CW & 145.250 FM 2m half wave dipole & 2m Whip Antenna.”
“These frequencies have been arbitrary selected as being free from interference but please be aware that if other traffic is present when listening, it is recommended that operators/ listeners scan 10 – 20 kHz below and above the listed frequencies.”
“To ensure that operators/listeners can be sure of QSO activity, there will be scheduled CQ transmissions every half hour. The mode of operation will be Morse (CW) and Voice (LSB & USB).”
“Amateur radio, sometimes known as ham radio, is both a hobby and a service that uses various types of radio equipment allowing communication with other radio amateurs around the world for the purpose of self-training, recreation and public service,” added the spokesman.
All of the operators are qualified and the temporary station has been licensed by Ofcom, the regulator.
