A new ham radio club is to launch in Burnham-On-Sea following a successful weekend of trial broadcasts in the town.
Following positive feedback during Saturday’s Folkfest Fun Day, when Burnham’s Moose International lodge 123 ran a temporary ham radio station, the organisers have decided to start a new amateur radio club from the BAY Centre.
The first meeting will be held in the centre’s training room on Wednesday 16th July at 7pm with regular monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of each successive month between 7-9pm.
“The club will initially be run under the umbrella of the BAY Centre, in liaison with Moose International Lodge 123, paying contributions to running costs in lieu of rent, in a similar fashion to how Burnham Camera Club started,” said a spokesman.
Membership is open to anybody with an interest in ham radio in the Burnham and Highbridge area.
Membership forms are available, with an attendance subscription, at each meeting.
Vice Chairman of the BAY Centre Mike Lang welcomed the launch of the new group. He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I have been a licensed radio ham since the 1975 and have always found it to be an enjoyable, absorbing hobby.”
“Obviously we will need to erect some form of aerial, even if only temporary for the duration of our meetings, and the BAY Centre managing trustees committee will have overall jurisdiction on installation of any equipment in use at the centre.”
Burnham and Highbridge’s Mayor and Mayoress, Martin and Arlene Cox, visited the radio station at the weekend and said they were impressed by what they saw.
