Youngsters across the Burnham-On-Sea area have celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as their favourite book characters.

Pupils across many local schools in Burnham-On-Sea, Highbridge, Brent Knoll and Berrow joined in the global celebration of books on Thursday (March 2nd).

Burnham-On-Sea’s St Andrew’s Junior School celebrated by dressing up as their favourite book characters and participating in a Read-A-Thon.

“Whenever the bell rang the children had to stop wherever they were doing and read!” said a spokesperson.

“They also did lots of fun book-related activities and the children tried to guess the teachers’ favourite children’s story books as part of a whole school competition.”

They raised just over £100 for Elsie Ever After, a charity that supports bereaved families by providing bereavement books and packs to families and schools.

Samuel Olbrecht in Year 6 said: “I loved guessing what character everybody had come as!” while Dax Blyth in Year 6 added: ” I loved learning about all the teachers favourite books when they were children.”

Brent Knoll School pupils also dressed up as their favourite book characters, with some superb colourful clothing on show.

Each child also received a World Book Day voucher. During their assembly, the children were also reminded of the fantastic selection of books freely available in Burnham-On-Sea Library.
