The company supplying fireworks to Burnham-On-Sea’s annual seafront display has this week donated pyrotechnics worth almost £3,000 to the event to help make up for the disappointment of last year’s cancelled event.
Skyburst The Firework Company has delighted organisers at the town council by giving extra fireworks to the value of £2,875 to this year’s display, which will be held on Sunday 9th November at 7pm.
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday: “It’s to make up for the disappointment of last year when the event had to be cancelled at the last moment on safety grounds because of adverse wind conditions.”
The free display is being partly funded by the Town Council and local businesses, including Burnham-On-Sea.com, following an appeal for funding earlier this year after Sedgemoor District Council said it could no longer afford to run the event.
As in previous years, the display will be set to music and, since this year’s event falls on Remembrance Sunday, the last sequence of fireworks will fill the sky with red falling leaves as a mark of respect for the country’s fallen heroes.
Members of the Rotary Club of Burnham-On-Sea will be present on the night to make a collection in aid of local charities.
Road closures will be in place from 6.45pm and spectators are therefore advised to arrive on the seafront early to ensure a parking place in any of the public car parks (Pier Street car park adjacent to Somerfields store, Marine Drive and Oxford Street).
“Should a cancellation prove necessary at the last moment on the advice of the professional firework company that it is not safe to fire, every effort will be made to notify spectators via Burnham-On-Sea.com and local radio stations,” said Mrs Shaw.
“This will of necessity be a last minute decision and one that will not be taken lightly. Last year was the first such cancellation in 15 years,” she added.
