Highbridge’s King Alfred School held a ‘Challenge Day’ this week when students were given a chance to find out more about a number of activities.
The aim of the event was to give students opportunities to become independent enquirers, creative thinkers, reflective learners and team workers.
In Year 7, the students took part in a cross-curricular day with geography, history and food technology exploring Commonwealth Day.
The activities ranged from making dishes from around the world to a race to collect as much information about the Commonwealth Countries as possible.
In addition, 45 students went to a Hindu temple in Neasden, London, to learn more about the religion.
In Year 8, the students became forensic scientists, where the school’s Science Team held a ‘Who done it?’ day. Students also learnt about blood typing, chromatography and fibre analysis.
In Year 9, the students had several choices around drama, music, design, technology and art, business, ICT and dance.
Meanwhile, the students of Year 10 worked hard in English on improving their presentations and their speaking and listening skills.
Many of the pupils commented on how useful this had been in helping them get ready for their GCSE exams. They then had a series of maths conundrums to solve, which left some scratching their heads!
Years 12 and 13 had a choice of going to the Imperial War Museum, a Public Services Trip, gaining a football coaching award, learning about first aid as well as some excellent presentations about Gap Year and life after 6th Form.
Assistant Head Jean-Paul Hoskins, who co-ordinated the day, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Challenge Days are a way of rewarding our students for all their hard work during the term.”
“The day was thoroughly enjoyed by not only the students but the staff who put in so much effort into making it such a success.”
