The approval of nearly 60 extra miles of coast path through Somerset has been announced by Natural England, with the promise of a big economic boost for the Burnham-On-Sea area.
The new area of the England Coast Path will aim to improve access for the public between Brean Down and Minehead – bringing extra tourists and walkers into the area.
The announcement from the Secretary of State follows detailed work by Natural England, Somerset County Council, landowners and others to ensure visitors can enjoy a clearly-marked walking route.
Emma Lusby, spokesperson for Natural England, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “As well as enabling visitors to enjoy new parts of Somerset’s coastline, improved access will help to support local economies, by attracting visitors to explore this popular coastline, and boosting business for local shops, pubs and hotels.”
She added: “Between Brean Down and Burnham, the trail will follow a level gradient along the beach. At Burnham, it will follow The Esplanade until the mouth of the River Brue.”
Once officially opened, the extended walking route will provide, for the first time, access along the whole coastline.
James Diamond, Natural England’s Area Manager for Somerset, added: “We are delighted the route has been given the green light and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in the preparations, as their significant knowledge and expertise has been invaluable.”
“We have worked closely with a wide range of local interests in developing the proposals and we now look forward to putting the route in place for everyone to enjoy.”
