Five hurt after blaze destroys chalets at Brean holiday park

-

Five people were treated for smoke inhalation early today (Monday) after a major blaze destroyed a group of chalets at Brean’s Pontins holiday park.

Seven fire crews from across the region were called to the holiday park in South Road at 2.14am after eight chalets were on fire.

Two fire engines from Burnham-On-Sea, a water carrier from Bridgwater and four further crews from Avon Fire and Rescue were called to the scene, pictured above.

“Four casualties were taken to hospital by ambulance suffering with smoke inhalation and a further casualty was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by paramedics,” a fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“Three chalets were well alight measuring 5m x 25m. Crews used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to create a fire break.”

He added: “A fire crew from Burnham returned to the incident at mid-day to damp down hotspots and assist the fire investigation officer.”

“It is confirmed eight chalets were damaged by the fire, with adjoining chalets also damaged by the heat.”

Fire crews used a total of two main jets, two hose reel jets, one foam jet with six firefighters in breathing apparatus. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
