The official investigation into a major fire which left five people hurt at Brean’s Pontins holiday park early on Monday (January 2nd) has concluded that it was started accidentally.
As first reported here by Burnham-On-Sea.com, five people were treated for smoke inhalation after the blaze broke out at 2.14am, destroying eight chalets at the park in South Road.
“The cause of the fire was investigated and was found to be accidental due to items left on a cooker,” a fire spokesman confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com this evening.
Seven fire crews from across the region were called to the park, including two fire engines from Burnham-On-Sea, a water carrier from Bridgwater and four extra crews from Avon Fire and Rescue, as pictured.
“Four casualties were taken to hospital by ambulance suffering with smoke inhalation and a further casualty was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by paramedics,” added the spokesman.
Crews used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to create a fire break to avoid the blaze spreading.
He added: “A fire crew from Burnham returned to the incident at mid-day to damp down hotspots and assist the fire investigation officer.”
“It was confirmed eight chalets were damaged by the fire, with adjoining chalets also damaged by the heat.”
Fire crews used a total of two main jets, two hose reel jets, one foam jet with six firefighters in breathing apparatus.
