Burnham hovercrafts rescue mud walker a mile from shore at Berrow

-

A man who was spotted wading across mudlfats a mile from the shore at Berrow was rescued by Coastguards and rescue hovercrafts from Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday (July 29th).

Beach lifeguards at Berrow raised alarm at 2.30pm and volunteers from BARB Search & Rescue and Burnham Coastguards were quickly on scene.

Burnham’s two rescue hovercrafts were launched with several members of the Coastguard Mud Rescue Team onboard and the man, who was on holiday from overseas, was taken onboard and flown back to the safety of the beach.

“The man was seen wading through mud a long distance from the shore in an area where other beach users have previously got into difficulty,” said a spokesman.

“We worked with the hovercraft crew to get the man safely back onto the shore. The incident is a fresh reminder to the public about staying clear of the muddy areas of the beach where it’s possible to get into difficulty.”
