Three new-look play areas in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge were opened on Thursday (July 31st) following £45,000 of refurbishment work.
The play areas at Crosses Penn, Coleridge Gardens and Stiling Close have been given major facelifts by Sedgemoor District Council.
Despite some criticism about the timing of the work taking place in the school holidays, as first reported here, the council says the overhaul has been finished in time for children to enjoy them for the majority of the summer break.
Thursday’s opening ceremonies were led by the Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, Cllr Peter Downing, pictured right, alongside council staff.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The council is very pleased to have re-opened these new-look play areas in time which I’m sure will be enjoyed by local children for many years to come.”
Meanwhile, Highbridge’s Apex Skate Park has also been given a £73,000 overhaul by the council and it is due to informally open today (1st August), with a formal opening taking place at the annual Apex Playday on Wednesday 6th August.
The revamp of Crosses Penn play area near Manor Gardens, costing £15,000, has seen a new unique multi-play unit installed which includes a slanted spinner, balance rope bridge, rail slide and various platforms.
Work to improve the park in Coleridge Gardens has also been completed, where a new multi-play unit with slide, spring see-saw and spinning bowl have been installed along with a new seat. The total work there cost £20,000.
Further improvements have been completed this week in Stiling Close, Highbridge where the work includes a replacement set of swings, a spring see-saw and spinning bowl along with a new seat and litter bin, valued at a total of £10,000.
The three play area improvements have been funded by RLT2 Developer Contributions for outdoor play facilities which are managed by Sedgemoor District Council.
A planned make-over for Talbot Close play area in Highbridge is also currently out for tender and work is expected to start there later in the year.
